A cramped, dark two-bedroom apartment on the top-floor of a listed Georgian building was transformed into a light-filled, open-plan loft that serves as the perfect canvas for the owner’s collection of antique textiles and artefacts.
The ceiling was removed and a skylight installed; and a corridor replaced with sliding doors that separate the sleeping area from the living room to create a more dynamic, flowing space with light oak floors.
Johanna Molineus Architects designed all the bespoke cabinetry and joinery, which includes discreet storage solutions, such as custom-built shoe cabinets at the top of the stairs that double as a balustrade, and an alcove above the kitchen that houses a sleeping space for guests.
JMA creates bespoke interior art-installation design for private collectors, galleries and public institutions to sensitively showcase the artworks without detracting from their unique qualities. We have created installations for antiques, antiquities, rare-book collections, and statuary by Ai Wei Wei, Anthony Gormley, and other internationally respected artists.
Johanna Molineus Architects were challenged by the client to create a space combining utility and living areas that resemble an art installation in which modern elements look light and temporary, allowing the historic elements to shine through.
We undertook an extensive internal fit-out, restoring a stunning ceiling fresco, cornices and original architectural features and updated the layout by integrating a contemporary semi-translucent glazed partition to create a luxurious en-suite.
